Ancient Magic, Magnetism and Psychic Forces

The Key to Power · Prof. L. H. Anderson · 1895

A late-19th century synthesis that treats personal magnetism, hypnotism, and will-power as the scientific explanation for ancient magic, miracles, and psychic phenomena. Read through the Mathematical Mechanics of the Soul, it appears as an energetic but incomplete attempt to formalize the Intentional Vector Potential and Presence Amplitude without a stable geometric model of the manifold.

The Mathematical Mechanics of the Soul Reading

In 1895, Prof. L. H. Anderson published a book that tried to do something ambitious: collapse the entire history of magic, miracles, clairvoyance, and spiritual influence into a single principle he called magnetism (or psychic force).

He argued that what the ancients called magic, what the Church called miracles, and what his own era was beginning to call hypnotism and personal magnetism were all expressions of the same underlying power — a power residing in the human will and capable of being deliberately cultivated.

Through the lens of the Mathematical Mechanics of the Soul, Anderson was groping toward two primary variables of the five-dimensional manifold:

Presence Amplitude (β) and the Intentional Vector Potential (Aμ).

When he speaks of “personal magnetism,” the “magnetic hand and eye,” or the ability to impress one’s will upon others at a distance, he is describing the coupling of a coherent internal state (high β) with a directed intentional field (Aμ). The stronger and cleaner the internal coherence, the more the surrounding relational metric yields.

His repeated emphasis on concentration, firmness of will, and the removal of doubt is an early, practical recognition that Field Friction (Γ) must be lowered. Double-mindedness, fear, or scattered attention spikes the Christoffel symbols of the internal geometry and collapses the operator’s effective range.

Anderson also correctly sensed that this power is polarized. He distinguishes (though imperfectly) between uses that elevate and uses that enslave — what the older traditions called white and black magic. In SFS terms, this is the sign of the Intent Charge (χ): positive polarity expands and clarifies; negative polarity contracts, extracts, and eventually warps the operator’s own metric.

Where the 1895 Model Breaks Down

Anderson’s system has three structural weaknesses when measured against the full five-dimensional framework:

1. No stable geometric model.
He treats magnetism as a kind of fluid or force that can be projected, but he never formalizes the underlying manifold. Without the metric tensor and the fifth coordinate (φ — the axis of consciousness alignment), the practitioner is left trying to push force rather than tune geometry.

2. Incomplete treatment of Ego-Rest Mass (μᵢ).
Much of the book implicitly encourages the inflation of personal power and influence. Without a clear protocol for liquidating defensive identity structures, the development of “magnetic force” often increases μᵢ. The result is a heavier, more rigid operator who can dominate short-term but generates increasing internal friction over time.

3. Missing clinical and somatic telemetry.
Anderson offers almost no description of what high coherence actually feels like in the body — the shifts in heart-rate variability, the quieting of the amygdala, the release of chronic neuromuscular bracing, or the expansion of subjective time (τ). Without these feedback signals, the practitioner cannot reliably distinguish genuine field alignment from temporary emotional intensity or self-suggestion.

In short, the book is a vigorous late-Victorian attempt to reclaim inner power from both religious mystery and materialist dismissal. It correctly identifies will, concentration, and polarity as central. What it lacks is the precise geometric language and the zero-friction operating protocols that turn intermittent magnetic experiences into a stable, sovereign state.
